Ch-Ch-Cha-Changes: Planning for Change at Florida Power & Light

Presenter: Gelsys Cardenes, Florida Power & Light

“Turn and face the strange…(ch-ch-cha-changes)” -David Bowie, Changes

Attend this participative workshop so that you can recognize the components of a change management plan for a major system implementation. You will discover ways to:

  • raise the comfort level of the target population on the changes to their jobs;
  • support initiatives by opening the lines of communications between front line, the project team and upper management.process for a major system implementation.

There are strange changes going on all around us---and quickly. The stock market plummeted to never-before-seen depths. Highly-qualified professionals are out of work. Organizations are scrambling to boot-camp their teams on Kotter’s Eight Steps for Change and Lewin’s Freeze/Refreeze Change Model. No one seems to know how to react to these strange changes fast enough.

Our locally-headquartered Florida Power and Light doesn’t need to scramble. They have perfected the art of change. FPL is agile; their ability to respond to change and emergencies is evidenced by their outstanding reply to Hurricane Andrew. Notice we wrote “respond to change” rather than “react.”. This is what we all want to be able to do: respond to change rather than react to it. FPL proves that elephants can, in fact, dance.

FPL’s facilitators are instructional designers.  They will share their energy and change management expertise with us, as it applies to their effort in training employees on a major system change. One of their favorite quotes about change is “change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.” -Robert C. Gallagher, former executive Associated Banc-Corp.
